Animal models may help fractionate shared and discrete pathways underpinning schizophrenia and autism.Thomas H. J. Burne, Darryl W. Eyles & John J. McGrath - 2008 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 31 (3):264-265.
Crespi & Badcock (C&B) present an appealing and parsimonious synthesis arguing that schizophrenia and autism are differentially regulated by maternal versus paternal genomic imprinting, respectively. We argue that animal models related to schizophrenia and autism provide a useful platform to explore the mechanisms outlined by C&B. We also note that schizophrenia and autism share certain risk factors such as advanced paternal age. Apart from genomic imprinting, copy number variants related to advanced paternal age may also contribute to the differential trajectory (...)

Couple Communication in Cancer: Protocol for a Multi-Method Examination.Shelby L. Langer, Joan M. Romano, Francis Keefe, Donald H. Baucom, Timothy Strauman, Karen L. Syrjala, Niall Bolger, John Burns, Jonathan B. Bricker, Michael Todd, Brian R. W. Baucom, Melanie S. Fischer, Neeta Ghosh, Julie Gralow, Veena Shankaran, S. Yousuf Zafar, Kelly Westbrook, Karena Leo, Katherine Ramos, Danielle M. Weber & Laura S. Porter - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:769407.
Cancer and its treatment pose challenges that affect not only patients but also their significant others, including intimate partners. Accumulating evidence suggests that couples’ ability to communicate effectively plays a major role in the psychological adjustment of both individuals and the quality of their relationship. Two key conceptual models have been proposed to account for how couple communication impacts psychological and relationship adjustment: the social-cognitive processing (SCP) model and the relationship intimacy (RI) model. These models posit different mechanisms and outcomes, (...)

Materialism in Ancient Greek Philosophy and in the Writings of the Young Marx.Tony Burns - 2000 - Historical Materialism 7 (1):3-39.
What is the young Marx's attitude towards questions of psychology? More precisely, what is his attitude towards the human mind and its relationship to the body? To deal adequately with this issue requires a consideration of the relationship between Marx and Feuerbach. It also requires some discussion of the thought of Aristotle. For the views of Feuerbach and the young Marx are not at all original. Rather, they represent a continuation of a long tradition which derives ultimately from ancient Greek (...)

Karl Popper und das Staatsverständnis des Kritischen Rationalismus.Robert Christian van Ooyen & Martin H. W. Möllers (eds.) - 2019 - Baden-Baden: Nomos.

First published in 1938. The aim of this book is to expound Kant’s _Critique of Judgement _by interpreting all the details in the light of what Kant himself declares to be his fundamental problem. _A Commentary on Kant’s Critique of Judgement _provides an excellent introduction to Kant’s third critique, and will be of interest to students of philosophy.

    Spartan Austerity: A Possible Explanation.H. W. Stubbs - 1950 - Classical Quarterly 44 (1-2):32-.
There are three outstanding events in the internal history of Sparta during the sixth century. First, there is the constitutional settlement denning the functions of the Crown, the Senate, and the Assembly: this is now generally admitted to have taken place about 600 B.C. Secondly, there is the increase in the importance of the ephorate, a pseudo-democratic development associated with the ephor Chilon and the year 556. Thirdly, there is the decline in Spartan material culture; this process begins shortly after (...)

    Thuchydides 1. 2. 6.H. W. Stubbs - 1972 - Classical Quarterly 22 (01):74-.
This is one of the most controversial passages in Thucydides' Archaeological Introduction, and perhaps the least happily phrased. Scholiasts explain is as meaning Athens in other respects, Greece other than Athens. Jowett, whose suggestions have not on the whole been bettered by later commentators, suggests three main possibilities of interpretation.

  39. The Four-Dimensional World.H. W. Noonan - 1976 - Analysis 37 (1):32-39.
This paper defends the view of continuants as 'four-dimensional worms' against an argument of Geach's. This is to the effect that if continuants are four-dimensional worms then their stages either do, or do not, fall under the very general terms satisfied by the continuants themselves (a stage of a man either is, or is not, a man); but that either alternative is untenable. I try to show how the former alternative may be defended by appealing to some of Geach's own (...)

British accounts of medical ethics concentrate on confidentiality to the exclusion of wider questions of privacy. This paper argues for consideration of privacy within medical ethics, and illustrates through the television series `Hospital', what may go awry when this wider concept is forgotten.

    Polycrates and Delos.H. W. Parke - 1946 - Classical Quarterly 40 (3-4):105-.
There is preserved in Suidas' Lexicon a story about Polycrates of Samos and the island of Delos. It is offered by the lexicographer as an explanation of the phrase τατ σοι κα πύθια κα δλια , when used in a colloquial sense to mean ‘it's all the same to you’. Polycrates had instituted a festival on Delos and asked the Pythia whether to call it by the one name or the other. The phrase, which was supposed to have been the (...)

Potentiality of embryonic stem cells: an ethical problem even with alternative stem cell sources.H.-W. Denker - 2006 - Journal of Medical Ethics 32 (11):665-671.
The recent discussions about alternative sources of human embryonic stem cells , while stirring new interest in the developmental potential of the various abnormal embryos or constructs proposed as such sources, also raise questions about the potential of the derived embryonic stem cells. The data on the developmental potential of embryonic stem cells that seem relevant for ethical considerations and aspects of patentability are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the meaning of “totipotency, omnipotency and pluripotency” as illustrated by a (...)

  45. Nietzsche's Critique of Democracy (1870–1886).H. W. Siemens - 2009 - Journal of Nietzsche Studies 38 (1):20-37.
This article reconstructs Nietzsche's shifting views on democracy in the period 1870–86 with reference to his enduring preoccupation with tyrannical concentrations of power and the conviction that radical pluralism offers the only effective form of resistance. As long as he identifies democracy with pluralism , he sympathizes with it as a site of resistance and emancipation. From around 1880 on, however, Nietzsche increasingly links it with tyranny, in the form of popular sovereignty, and with the promotion of uniformity, to the (...)
